Character and a movement study with Buba

Do you want to create characters who are much more than the words they say? Come explore non-traditional ways to create and explore! In the style of Lecoq, we will go beyond text to discover complex, funny, living, breathing characters. 

Guided by international artist Buba Basishvili, this workshop includes a physical warm-up, theatre games, and ensemble work. Students will work together and share their creations in class.

This workshop is ideal for those with some experience in theatre, dance, or movement. 

What to Expect:

  • Welcoming circle

  • Breath and presence: How oxygen can affect your presence and prepare you to open for creative work. 

  • Starting from neutral: The neutral mask and some differences between the neutral actor and the engaged actor. 

  • Character work: Gesture and body positions, exaggerated vs. minimal. 

  • Following character- movement and its limitations

  • Partnering: Your partner is the best partner in the world. How to listen and see.

  • Rehearsal Tools: New ideas for works in progress.

  • Debrief

What to bring: Please wear comfortable clothes, have a bottle of water and be ready to move. The learning will take place through your physical engagement and playing theatre games together.

SLOW TEMPO: ENERGY OF THE MOMENT with NICOLE

Do you need a space to slow down? To breathe? To live in the moment? 

Join us for a workshop in Slow Tempo, a silent narrative performance style developed by Japanese theatre director Shogo Ohta. 

As performance training, Slow Tempo cultivates the mind-body connection, physical balance, specificity of thought, clarity of intention, and moment-to-moment awareness.

This workshop is open to artists of all skill and fitness levels. Writers, visual artists, and other contemplatives are welcome too!

What to Expect:

  • Presence in Slow Tempo: Seeing and Breathing

  • Break.

  • Partnering in Slow Tempo: Deepening the Connection for Real-Time Scenework.

What to Bring: 

  • Please wear clothes you are comfortable rolling around on the floor in.

  • A bottle of water.

  • A journal/notebook and pen/pencil.

THE SUZUKI METHOD WITH NICOLE

The Suzuki Method of actor training cultivates the performer’s awareness of their body. With a focus on the center of gravity, this training can increase the actor’s moment-to-moment commitment, emotional power, and truthful movement onstage.

Developed by Japanese theatre director Tadashi Suzuki, the method was influenced by noh, kabuki, martial arts, ballet, and Greek theatre. It has been taught at prestigious drama schools including Julliard, New York’s Columbia University, and The University of California at San Diego. 

 This introductory workshop will introduce you to the foundational Suzuki forms and training philosophy. 

This workshop is ideal for those with some experience in theatre, dance, or movement.

What to expect:

  • Welcome Circle

  • Brief spoken introduction to Mr. Suzuki’s method.

  • Group warm-up

  • The Basic Forms:

    • Quickening the core

    • Quickening the imagination 

    • Speaking from the core

    • Stamping across the floor

  • Cool Down

  • Closing Circle 

What to bring: 

  • Bring a bottle of water and be ready to sweat!

  • Socks (or tabi) are necessary. 

  • Please wear clothes you are comfortable rolling on the floor in.

  • Please wear pants that will allow the instructor to see the position of your knees. Shorts or leggings are best.
