ZOTTO
An immersive supernatural Japanese Folktale
Produced by the Japanese Arts Network, Theatre Artibus, American Lore Theater, Luster Productions, Control Group Productions
JULY 6-30, 2023 (Thursdays-Sundays)
Audiences explore three generations of Japanese American women and their relationship to Denver’s history as they encounter yokai and obake (Japanese spirits and demons). The story of ZOTTO addresses neighborhood redlining, Japanese American resettlement following WWII, racial violence and generational trauma through the lens of Japanese folklore. ZOTTO also lifts up the resilience and joy in collective community healing. ZOTTO will take place at Sakura Square, a block that is historically significant to the Japanese American community in Denver, within vacant offices that will be converted into a site-specific performance space.
